Calls of booms continue in Clintonville
Residents report more booms Monday night

CLINTONVILLE - Residents in Clintonville were back out of their houses on Monday night saying things in their houses were shaking and they were hearing loud ‘booming’ sounds.

City officials say from on Monday from 1:45 a.m. until 1 p.m., Clintonville Police Dispatch received about 150 calls from people hearing explosion-like sounds.

City administrator Lisa Kuss told FOX 11 26 more calls came in shortly after 8 p.m.
City officials continue to monitor the area and want residents to call police if they hear or see anything out of the ordinary.

“It almost felt like a heavy duty thunderstorm,” said Al Miller of Clintonville. “It was shaking though.”
City officials say they still do not know what is causing the ground to shake or the loud noises.

They say they are focusing on geology.
“It is certainly a possibility that it may remain a mystery, but if there is something we can do, we’ll certainly continue to try to do that,” said Kuss.

After exploring manhole covers and checking gas levels, city officials called geologists at UW-Madison.
“The activity does not look like what normally happens when you have earthquakes occurring,” said Clifford Thurber, a geophysics professor at UW-Madison.

Thurber looked at a reading from a seismic station in Shiocton, which is about 20 miles away from Clintonville.
“What you can see on that is evidence that the ground is shaking in an unusual way,” said Thurber.
Thurber says activity at a nearby farm might have caused the readings at the seismic station. He recommends Clintonville hires an environmental consulting firm to look at the matter more closely.

“It points to some kind of natural phenomenon that is happening not too deep within the earth that’s causing the shaking,” said Thurber.

“Whether their could be some sort of seismic activity monitoring that we could do closer to Clintonville here, we have no idea if we can get that equipment here on any sort of a timely basis, but we certainly will try to do that,” said Kuss.
City leaders were able to confirm there were no mining or explosive companies operating in the area.
The U.S. Military also said it was not doing anything in the area to cause any sort of booming sound.
